From the Chairman
Congratulations and many thanks to everyone who helped make our "We're In - Supreme Donor" campaign a great success! I am happy to report we have kept pace with the costs of fighting the Mille Lacs 1837 Treaty Case at the United States Supreme Court. While we are still behind about $250,000 in costs it took to get to the Supreme Court, we have managed to reduce the debt over the summer. The written phase of the appeal will be completed by the end of October, and oral arguments will take place on December 2, 1998. By next June we should have a final ruling.

Along with thousands of outdoor enthusiasts, we were deeply saddened by the news that renowned wildlife artist and ardent PERM supporter, Les Kouba had passed away on September 13, 1998. Among his countless contributions to conservation, is our very own "Opening Day on Lake Mille Lacs". This print, which Les did for PERM along with Bud Grant, has been one of our most successful fundraising tools. One of my most treasured memories was the gracious and supportive talk Les gave at the 1997 PERM Wild Game Dinner. Those who were there all agreed that meeting Les was the highlight of the evening. PERM, and all the outdoor community, will miss Les C. Kouba. We extend our sympathies to his family and friends.

We received some long awaited good news from the federal government this summer. No, it's not that they intend to correct federal Indian policy. That would be truly good news, but it will take a few more years and a lot more hard work from dedicated Indians and non-Indians to make that a reality. What we did learn however, was that the IRS has concluded after our five year review, that we will continue to be classified as a 501(c)3 charitable organization. While this was the expected determination, given the controversial nature of our biggest cause, there was always that lingering worry in the back of my mind that somehow politics would prevent our advance ruling to be continued. What this means to all of you is that we have and will continue, to meet certain federal criteria that ensure we operate in a lawful and charitable fashion. It also means that your donations will continue to be tax deductible!

We have a busy schedule for the coming months as usual.
We look forward to seeing you at the St. Paul Ice Fishing Show in December at Rivercenter.
Also attention all deer hunters. Don't forget to stop at Smokin Hill five miles north of Isle, on Hwy 47 on Friday, November 6th for our 3rd Annual Deer Hunters Supper. Why bother cooking a big meal at deer camp when you can let PERM do the work!
PERM's Annual Metro Area Fundraiser will be February 4, 1999 at Blainbrook Entertainment Center on Hwy. 65 in Blaine. This is our biggest annual metro event with raffles, auctions and great speakers!
PERM's 4th Annual Wild Game Dinner is scheduled for February 27, 1999. This year we have moved the event to Earle Brown Center in Brooklyn Center. It should make parking a lot easier. Don't forget we need donated wild game. Keep PERM in mind as you are in the field this fall!
Please mark these events on your calendar. For more details on all our events see page 8. I Look forward to seeing you there!

Are you receiving too many copies of our newsletter? If you are, put them to good use by passing them along to friends or coworkers. But if you have no use for extra copies, you can help us save on postage by clipping off the address labels and returning them to PERM indicating which address label we should keep on our data base. While we try to eliminate all duplicates from our mailing database, the computer will not find them if we have them entered slightly different from one to the next. It often is something simple like a period or comma out of place or even an abbreviation like Ln. instead of Lane. Your assistance in this matter will make our job much easier.

Do you always wait until the last minute to find an appropriate Christmas gift for the outdoors person on your list? We've got a great idea for you this year. Why not purchase a ticket to our Wild Game Dinner for that hard to shop for person. Tickets are only $40.00 and it includes a one year membership to PERM. Order forms can be found in this newsletter. PERM art prints also make excellent holiday gifts. Why not do your shopping with PERM this year and have the added pleasure of knowing the profits are being used to support a cause we all believe in?
